Description
Logen Ninefingers, infamous barbarian, has finally run out of luck. Caught in one feud too many, he's on the verge of becoming a dead barbarian - leaving nothing behind him but bad songs, dead friends, and a lot of happy enemies.

Nobleman, dashing officer, and paragon of selfishness, Captain Jezal dan Luthar has nothing extra dangerous in intellect than fleecing his friends at cards and dreaming of glory in the fencing circle. But war is brewing, and on the battlefields of the frozen North they fight by altogether bloodier rules.

Inquisitor Glokta, cripple turned torturer, would like nothing better than to see Jezal come home in a box. But then Glokta hates everyone: cutting treason out of the Union one confession at a time leaves little room for friendship. His latest trail of corpses may lead him right to the rotten heart of government, if he can stay alive long enough to follow it.

Enter the wizard, Bayaz. A bald old man together with a terrible temper and a pathetic assistant, he could be the First of the Magi, he could be a impressive fraud, but whatever he is, he's concerning to do the lives of Logen, Jezal, and Glotka a whole lot extra difficult.

Murderous conspiracies rise to the surface, old scores are ready to be settled, and the line between hero and villain is sharp enough to illustrate blood. Unpredictable, compelling, wickedly funny, and packed together with unforgettable characters, The Blade Itself is noir fantasy together with a real cutting edge.

Customer rating is 5 of 5  One of the best ever. Orson Scott Card lover.   2010-08-29
By Peter Reader
This is definately one of the best books I've ever read. I hesitate to say this because it might ruin the enjoyment of finding out how good this book actually is, but you MUST read it, so it must be said.

I love knowing the characters I read about and I can't wait to see what happens to these ones in the next book. I love fantasy that doesn't revolve around dragons elves and dwarves, something different. I love the imagination of books directed at younger readers because they're more creative. This one is definately NOT for younger readers. The characters are awesomely violent.

Here's the authors I like so you can determine if you have similiar tastes (Top to bottom the best to almost best):

Orson Scott Card (Abercrombie is most similiar to Card, but the others are what I like too)
Garth Nix
Phillip Pullman
Jonathan Stroud
Susan Cooper (only the dark is rising)
L'engle
Even Charlaine Harris for a quick read

After 9 different Fantasy series and two solid years of reading "The First Law Trilogy" is the second best series on my list and has produced still my favorite character. The book is a great read, full of everything epic fantasy should have and then some. All books are equally great and then Joe is going to treat us with "The Heroes" in due time.

This book, and the two that follow, will transform how you think about fantasy literature.

Don't hesitate, just get it!

Customer rating is 3 of 5  good plot and characters,, but WORDY and SLOW   2010-07-24

I liked the story line, and the characters, but found the writing style very, verbose. This book really needed to be edited. Lots of long descriptions that added nothing to the story for me. Even the fight scenes left the heros with time for introspection, during the fighting! I may read the sequel in the hope that it moves faster. I found myself skimming whole paragraphs to get some movement into the story. Much more human interest and self doubt than action.
Customer rating is 5 of 5  Fantasy with a sense of humor   2010-07-18

I can't say enough good things about this trilogy. Excellent character development and a fine sense of humor throughout. This series ranks up there as an all-time-favorite read for me!

One side note: I wouldn't recommend for readers too young. The language is fairly 'adult' as is some of the content.
